HOW Does the skilled migration program work?

Australia is always looking for Skilled migrants to boost our working economy!
These visas are for Permanent Residency and are based around you... No employer is required.

The Subclass 189 independent visa - this allows you to live and work anywhere in Australia.

The Subclass 190 state/territory government nominated visa - you will make a commitment to a particular local government to live, work and study in their area.

The Subclass 491 regional sponsored visa leading to the 191 permanent visa - you are committed to live, work and study in a regional area for a minimum of 3 years in order to be eligible for permanent residency.  You are sponsored by the local government (ideally) or by a family member who is also in the regional area.

What do I need for the Skilled Migration visa:

The Skilled Independent Visa can take months to prepare - so having an agent by your side to guide and assist you is invaluable!
Below are some of the items you need to consider when preparing for Skilled Migration...

- Skill on the Occupation List - the Government has created different lists of Skilled Occupations that they want foreign workers to come to Australia to do.  They recognise that Australia will benefit from migrants coming to fill these areas of shortage.  There are a number of occupation lists, so selecting from the right list is crucial!   The list to which your occupation is listed on will determine whether you can apply independently; require a state nomination; or whether it is only avaialbe for regional sponsorship.

- Skills assessment - a leading Authority in Australia will need to assess your qualifications and work experience to confirm you are deemed skilled in your occupation to Australian standards.  The Skills Assessing Authority will advise what documents and experience is needed to be deemed skilled to an Australian level.  This will include items such as the level, number of years of studies, and specific subjects that may have to be completed.  They will also indicate whether post-study work experience is also needed.  At times an assessor may call you for an interview and for some trades, a formal hands-on test may be required also.  Each occupation will be given a specific Authority to seek such assessment, so don't just go to any assessor to do this!

- English level - Australia expects skilled people to have at least a competent level of English.  For some select countries, having the passport alone will deem you as competent in English but will not award you any points.  For others, your English ability will need to be proven through a test like IELTS or PTE.

- Educational qualification - the Qualification obtained in your home country will need to be considered at the same level as Australia. Generally the skills assessing authority will provide guidance on this and then confirm its level upon a successful skills assessment being obtained.  At other times, the qualification may need to be independently reviewed.  Having completed your education in Australia can have its benefits also.  There will be no doubt as to the skill level awarded and if your course meets other criteria like length of study and location of study, these can award you bonus points.

- Work experience - the years of work you have undertaken should be closely related to your education qualification.  Generally this undertaken after you have completed your course. However at times, work experience alone can be enough to achieve a successful skills assessment, even if your studies are in another field.

- State/Territory nomination - you are guaranteed a visa invitation should the State or Territory Government in Australia select to Sponsor you.  Each government program will have their own requirements to fulfill and could focus on particular areas such as the field of work, English level, years of experience, whether you are single or have a partner, whether you are in Australia already or overseas, whether you are currently working in your field or not.

Trust in Great Australian Migration to have the answers to help you navigate it all.  We will move you one step closer to living and working in Australia.
