The most important document you can hold is your Australian Citizenship Certificate.
At Great Australian Migration we can help you to take that final step to calling yourself an Australian.

Australian citizenship - the final, and for many, the most important part of the migration journey.  Becoming an Australian citizen means that you committing to sharing and upholding it’s values. It is the step that will enable you to proudly declare
'I am Australian!'.
As a citizen you must:
  • obey the laws of Australia
  • vote in federal and state or territory elections, and in a referendum
  • defend Australia should the need arise
  • serve on jury duty if called to do so
As a citizen you can:
  • apply for children born overseas to become Australian citizens by descent
  • apply for a job in the Australian Public Service or in the Australian Defence Force
  • seek election to parliament – yes you too could be the next Prime Minister!
  • apply for an Australian passport and re-enter Australia freely
  • ask for consular assistance from an Australian official while overseas

steps to becoming a citizen

1.  Make an application when you are eligible to.  There are 4 basic criteria to meet before lodging for Citizenship:
1. Hold your Permanent Resident visa for at least 12 months
2. Hold any valid visas for Australia over the last 4 years
3. Have been in Australia for most of the past year - travelled outside of Australia for no more than 90 days total
4. Have been in Australia for most of the past 4 years - travelled outside of Australia for no more than 1 year total

2.  For most applicants, you must take the Citizenship test and have an interview with an officer to present your ID documents.
The citizenship test is taken to demonstrate that you have a basic knowledge of the English language, that you understand what it means to become an Australian citizen - the responsibilities and privileges and a commitment to the Australian values based on freedom, respect and equality.
To pass the test you must answer 20 multiple choice questions in 45 minutes; of those 20 questions, you must answer all 5 of the Australian values questions correctly, and get a pass mark of at least 75% overall.

3. Upon passing the test and interview, your application can continue processing.

4.  Once approved, you will wait for an invitation to your Citizenship Ceremony.
At the citizenship ceremony, you will pledge your loyalty to Australia and its people; that you will share Australia’s democratic beliefs and respect its rights and liberties; and to uphold and obey the laws of Australia.
You do not become an Australian citizen until you have made your pledge of commitment to Australia.

5.  CONGRATULATIONS – You are now Australia’s newest citizen!
You are no longer the holder of a visa, nor able to be granted a visa.  Ensure you hold an Australia Passport for all your travels out of the country - https://www.passports.gov.au/

DUAL CITIZENSHIP:  Australia allows for dual citizenship… but you will need to check with your own country if it’s permitted.  Read this for more guidance: https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/before-you-go/who-you-are/dual-nationals
